UDQ – Universal Data Query Software

UDC Universal Data Query Software, Boosts user productivity, improves business efficiencies.

(April 2007)

Summary

For many years database systems have been utilized by organizations seeking to capture, process and leverage information about their business. Traditional application models collect the data and then present the information in a manner that software developers determine will be useful to the user community. Over time, users quickly discover new uses for corporate data and are constantly seeking ways to access and present the information that they know exists in the database.

There is an opportunity to improve the user experience while boosting productivity and increasing business efficiencies:

Enterprise database systems are often enormously complex and require a great deal of skill to safely navigate and utilize. For the majority of today’s user communities, the application layer is the only option for interacting with the underlying data source. There are utilities available for bringing users into closer contact with corporate data, for example Microsoft Access (SQL Server) and Quest’s Toad (Oracle); however, these solutions pose other risks than frequently outweigh their benefit, and most Database Administrators are uncomfortable distributing these tools to the user community.

Introducing Universal Data Query: An intelligent data query and reporting tool designed for safe user-guided access to corporate data resources, Universal Data Query (UDQ) fills the gap between the application layer and database.

The software is designed to allow non-technical employees to quickly browse and report on information stored in enterprise data sources. With a simple point-and-click interface, UDQ generates well-formed, optimized queries against the underlying data. Users are finally able to analyze information stored in the database without any prior knowledge of SQL.

Improvements to business efficiency

In most IT environments, requests for new reports, data views and extracts from the user community are a constant distraction to developers and database professionals. UDQ supplies users with an efficient means of performing these tasks and can dramatically improve the user experience, freeing developers and database professionals to focus on other priorities.

Design imperatives

• Focus on non-technical end users

• Secure connection to data resources

• Presents only tables and views that are part of the application; underlying system schema is not available with this software

• Simple interface requiring minimal training to become efficient

• Rich reporting, filtering and data export options

Redistributable Report Queries

In addition to supporting ad hoc queries, Universal Data Query offers a reporting only mode for less sophisticated users.  Ad hoc queries may be saved (with full support for run-time parameter generation such as "Enter date range"), and presented in a familiar, "office-like" interface.  A variety of attractive report templates are available to generate presentation quality reports with no exposure to SQL whatsoever.  UDQ's Reporting Only mode insulates the user from SQL and only presents "friendly", pre-formatted report titles.
